Renewed conflict and rising tensions between Ethiopia and Eritrea have raised fears of another devastating war in the Horn of Africa. As uncertainty grows, what does this mean for the people and Christians living in both nations?

The Horn of Africa is facing a period of renewed uncertainty as relations between Ethiopia and Eritrea deteriorate and fighting intensifies in northern Ethiopia. With memories of previous wars still fresh, the possibility of another regional conflict raises serious concerns for civilians, families and the Church.

In recent weeks, clashes in Ethiopia’s Tigray region have reignited following renewed fighting between federal government-aligned forces and opposition groups. Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of sending troops across its border and supporting armed groups, allegations that Eritrea disputes. Diplomatic relations have also broken down, increasing fears that the situation could escalate into a wider war.

The two countries share a painful history of conflict. Their 1998–2000 border war claimed tens of thousands of lives, while Eritrea was also involved in Ethiopia’s devastating Tigray war between 2020 and 2022. For communities that have already endured violence, displacement and loss, renewed hostilities threaten to deepen existing wounds.

Beyond the political tensions, the humanitarian consequences remain a major concern. Further fighting could disrupt access to food, healthcare and essential services, displace families and leave vulnerable communities facing even greater hardship. In Tigray, where recovery from previous conflict remains fragile, renewed instability threatens the lives and livelihoods of those already struggling to rebuild.

For Christians, the situation presents additional concerns. In Ethiopia, Believers and churches may face the consequences of renewed violence alongside the wider population. In Eritrea, Christians already face severe restrictions on religious freedom. The government continues to detain Believers from religious communities it does not recognise, while restrictions on worship and religious activities remain a serious concern.

Although the political and religious circumstances differ between the two countries, Christians in both nations need the prayers of the global Church. The prospect of another war raises questions about the safety of families, the future of young people and the ability of churches to serve their communities during a time of uncertainty.

As developments unfold, the Church is called to pray for peace, protect the vulnerable and remember Believers who continue to follow Christ amid difficult circumstances. While the future remains uncertain, we can ask God to bring wisdom to leaders, comfort to those suffering and hope to communities fearful of what lies ahead.

Let us pray:

  1. For peace and restraint: Pray for the leaders of Ethiopia and Eritrea to pursue dialogue rather than war, and for tensions to de-escalate before more lives are lost.
  2. For protection and provision: Pray for civilians, displaced families and vulnerable communities affected by the fighting, asking God to provide safety, food, medical care and comfort.
  3. For the Church: Pray for Christians in both countries, particularly Believers in Eritrea facing religious persecution. Ask God to strengthen their faith, protect those at risk and enable churches to remain places of hope, compassion and encouragement.
