    FAITH UNDER PRESSURE: THE CHURCH IN VIETNAM

    Although Vietnam’s constitution guarantees freedom of religion, many Christians, particularly those from independent churches or ethnic minority communities, continue to face surveillance, intimidation, and restrictions because of their faith.

    Why Are Christians Being Targeted?

    Vietnam is a one-party Communist state where the government closely monitors religious activity. Religious organisations are expected to register and operate under the state’s oversight. Churches that choose to remain independent or refuse government control are often viewed with suspicion and may face harassment, surveillance, and restrictions. Christians from ethnic minority groups, especially the Montagnard and Hmong communities, are particularly vulnerable, as authorities sometimes accuse them of threatening national unity or public order. As a result, many Believers face pressure simply for practising their faith outside state-approved structures.

    What Is Happening?

    Many Christians in Vietnam continue to face restrictions because of their faith. Church leaders have been arrested or imprisoned, while pastors and Believers from unregistered churches are often questioned, fined, or detained. House churches, especially in rural areas, are closely monitored, and gatherings may be disrupted by authorities. Some Christians have been pressured to renounce their faith, while others struggle to register their churches or obtain permission to hold Christian events. Believers from the Montagnard and Hmong communities face especially harsh treatment, including harassment, discrimination, and, in some cases, the confiscation of land used for worship. As a result, many congregations meet quietly in homes, aware that they may be under surveillance. Even in the face of these challenges, Christians remain committed to gathering, worshipping, and sharing the hope of the Gospel with courage and perseverance.

    These ongoing concerns have also attracted international attention. In 2026, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom again expressed concern over conditions in Vietnam, while the Vietnamese government rejected the findings as inaccurate.

    The Church Remains Strong

    Despite the ongoing restrictions, the Church in Vietnam continues to stand firm. Many Believers remain faithful, even when doing so comes at a personal cost. House churches continue to grow as Christians gather quietly in homes to worship, pray, and encourage one another. The Gospel is shared through personal relationships, and many people are coming to Christ despite the challenges they face. Vietnam is home to 115 people groups, and more than half are still considered unreached, highlighting the continued need for faithful witness and prayer. Bible training and discipleship also continue, often in small groups or through trusted networks. Younger Christians are choosing to follow Jesus with courage, while churches work together to support those facing hardship or persecution. Their perseverance is a powerful reminder that the Church cannot be stopped and that God continues to strengthen His people, even in difficult circumstances.

    Biblical Reflection

    Throughout history, the spread of the Gospel has often been met with opposition. Jesus warned His followers that they would face persecution because they belong to Him (John 15:18–20), and the early Church continued to preach boldly despite threats and suffering (Acts 4). This remains true for many Christians today, including Believers in Vietnam. Their perseverance reminds us that God remains with His people, even in difficult circumstances. Nothing—not hardship, persecution, nor fear—can separate Believers from the love of Christ (Romans 8:35–39). As we pray for the Church in Vietnam, may we also be encouraged by their steadfastness and remain committed to following Christ, whatever the cost.

    • Pray that Christians in Vietnam would remain steadfast in their faith and continue to trust God despite persecution and restrictions. 
    • Pray for wisdom, courage, and protection for pastors, church leaders, and Believers as they gather, disciple others, and share the Gospel. 
    • Pray that the authorities would respect freedom of religion and that Christians would be able to worship openly and without fear. 
    • Pray that the Church in Vietnam would continue to grow, that many people would come to know Christ, and that younger Believers would remain faithful to Him
